The Trouble of Transitioning
Taking over a business?
As I'm sure you've realized by now, life is messy. Business is messy.
To all the control freaks out there if you've chosen business as your calling - I'm sorry.
Kidding aside, there are things we can control and things we must accept. A messy marketing transition, while it may feel like a hassle at first, does not have to be.
The following challenges can affect any business change of ownership:
1. No one ever remembers everything you need.
2. Facebook and Google Verification are challenging.
3. The process of web hosting transitions vary.
4. Your brand vision may vary wildly in contrast with your predecessor's which makes you lose some customers.
How do you make the most of these challenges?
1. Go into every meeting with a guide sheet to changing business. I'd even go so far as to send a copy to your predecessor to fill out before the meeting.
2. Digital Marketing is that gift that keeps on giving or dries up and dies. It can be an asset if it's treated like one. Include the cost of social media management in your upkeep. Multiply the norm by 3 for transitions. Not for the product but the transition time ineffectivity (3-9 months) Though, the length of time depends on how resistant the market is to your new vision.
3. Web Hosting - aka the keys to your business' digital kingdom - can be one of the most crucial changes of ownership. Don't sign anything until you're sure you can take over or at least have contact with the existing web manager.
What if it's too late? Am I just SOL?
No. There are processes, but they take time. Working with a web manager is certainly preferable, especially if they already have access to that platform.
Even if they don't they likely have someone who does or can navigate the process for you.
The DIY option involves finding your host, filling out a form to prove ownership and waiting for a reply. 2-3 days between each pass on low maintenence sites can lead to months between a resolution, especially considering as the business owner you don't have time to drop everything and wait. But to each their own.
My experience:
I have worked with Bluehost, Simvoley, GoDaddy, Squarespace, Wix, Snapps, Nixiehost, Namesilo, & NameCheap. Domains & Hosting Transfers.
I can managed Facebook, Instagram, Linked In, TikTok, YouTube, and Google.
4. Brand Vision:
Once you have control, it's time to build your new vision, right? I think a lot of business owners should consider a pre-step to building of any kind. It can save a lot of heart ache to do a bit of existing brand research and ease the transition. What does this mean?
